West Virginia Disability and Employment Attorney

Tori Pettry is a West Virginia lawyer helping people with Social Security Disability and employment law cases. She also assists with personal injury and insurance defense cases.

Tori develops strategies for clients’ cases, keeps their cases moving through the system, makes sure clients meet important deadlines and keeps clients informed and up to date about the status of their claims.

Tori joined the Charleston law firm office of Shaffer & Shaffer in 2025 after obtaining her Juris Doctor from the West Virginia University College of Law. Before that, she graduated from West Virginia University Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

She is admitted to practice law in West Virginia state courts and federal courts in the Northern District of West Virginia and the Southern District of West Virginia.

Tori grew up in Boone County. Her parents both worked for the state, and through their work she saw how important it was for residents to have caring advocates and effective representation when they dealt with difficult challenges in life.

Growing up, she also witnessed many childhood friends suffer from the opioid crisis.

All of this motivated her to help others.

“I always felt like there was no one advocating for the people in my county, and I decided I wanted to be the one to make a difference,” she said.

During law school she worked with the late Honorable Joanna Tabit, Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge, and at Legal Aid of West Virginia.

Each experience reinforced her commitment to serving her community and addressing the needs of people all over West Virginia.

Tori appreciates the hometown, community-focused culture of Shaffer & Shaffer.

Shaffer & Shaffer has served Madison and Boone County, Tori’s home, for over 100 years, in addition to the firm’s office in Charleston. She had long heard about and respected Shaffer’s work in Boone County before joining the firm.

Among other activities, she said the firm’s commitment to Boone County is clear in its participation in the WVU Boone County Alumni Chapter and the Boone County Community Foundation.

Getting through tough times and dealing with tricky legal issues is difficult on your own, so don’t go it alone. Shaffer & Shaffer has helped thousands of West Virginians for generations.

It’s not just you. It’s Shaffer & You.

    Since 1909, Clients, Community, Commitment.

Common Questions About Social Security Disability and Employment Law

Do I need a Social Security Disability lawyer to apply for disability benefits?

Getting approved for disability benefits is difficult, even when people think they obviously have severe health problems. The challenge is that you must prove you can’t work.

Social Security has high standards, and if you don’t know what it looks for in a disability claim, it’s tough to show a claims examiner that your medical problems are severe enough to stop you from working any job.

Tori Pettry and the disability lawyer team at Shaffer & Shaffer can help you make your case to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and fight for the benefits you deserve. No fee until you win benefits.

When should I talk to an employment lawyer?

A West Virginia employment lawyer can help you with many problems you might encounter in the workplace, including harassment, retaliation, and discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation or another protected characteristic.

Building a case against an employer or former employer isn’t easy. Our team can help you gather the evidence you need to hold people accountable for the harm they caused you and your career.
